Does sanitizing actually fix a musty smell, or just mask it?

It depends on what the duct is made of. Fogging a clean sheet metal trunk works. Fogging a 1970s fiberglass ductboard plenum that is shedding and damp does not. The biocide lands on fiber, the fiber stays wet, the odor returns. Same story with slab-embedded runs in older Venice ranch homes. Those hold standing water. No chemical outlives groundwater.

So the first step here is inspection, not spraying. We look at inner liner condition, return plenum seams at the air handler, and whether boots are sweating into ceiling drywall. Mold on a fiberglass return plenum is a replacement conversation. Sanitizing over it buys weeks.
