Mold in Venice ductwork and what removal actually involves

Venice has a split duct inventory. Slab-embedded ducts sit under some 1950s and 1960s ranch homes. Those runs flood. Water sits in the low spots. That is the usual source of a musty odor that keeps coming back after a cleaning. Ductboard plenums from the 1970s through the 1990s are the other common case. Aged ductboard is friable. It sheds fiber and holds growth in the bare glass face.

Cleaning does not fix either one. Growth on porous fiberglass cannot be scrubbed off. The material gets cut out and replaced. Flex with a deteriorated inner liner gets replaced too. Only sheet metal trunk is a real candidate for cleaning and treatment.

The cause matters more than the mold. Sweating boots and collars staining ceiling drywall mean condensation, not a dirty duct. A leaking return plenum pulls hot humid attic air straight into the system. Fix that and the moisture source goes away. Skip it and you pay twice.

Check things yourself first. Pull a return grille and look at the plenum face. Look for sand and blown insulation inside supplies. High indoor humidity with a cold setpoint points at leakage, not at dirt.
